My word for 2025 was hope, and how much I needed it. From house remodel to soul renovation, 2025 was a year of holding onto hope and seeing God move in magnificent ways.

For 2026, Jesus’ visit to Nain in Luke 7:11-17 to raise the widow’s only son stands out prominently. Jesus says to the dead man, “Young man, I say to you, get up!

The phrase, “Get up,” is my phrase for 2026, reminding me of this encounter.

“Get up” calls to mind areas of my own heart and life, where I remain dead, lifeless, and need to arise.

In addition, this passage reminds me of the resurrection power of Jesus. He came to raise to life those dead in their trespasses and sins. His words, “Son or Daughter, get up!” are the proclamation of the Gospel— for there are countless people around us who need Him.

Such a passion for the lost was beautifully demonstrated by Jim Elliott. He and four others were martyred 70 years ago this month by the Waorani (Auca) Indians. Led by a reckless and passionate desire to win the lost, Jim’s published journals are filled with a desire to live. He wrote:

“Wherever you are, be all there! Live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God.”

Perhaps, with “Get up,” this is a year to live “to the hilt in every situation” in order to see many saved.

I was reminded of this at a coffee shop today, as I chatted with the barista, Sarah. She said she loved working for the owners: “I’m not religious,” she told me, “but, they are Christians and the nicest people I have ever met.” What a testimony they are living before her.

I told her, “This life is not about being religious, it is about knowing Jesus. It sounds like they are offering you a great testimony for him.”

“They are,” she said.

This year may Sarah and the countless ones like her that you and I encounter get to hear Jesus saying through us, “Daughter, I say to you, get up!” Who around you is dead and needs life?
